Sustainable restaurants, breweries and wineries are reshaping Ontario’s food and drink scene—sourcing local, cutting waste and building greener communities.

Here’s a roundup of some of Ontario’s most passionate chefs, winemakers and brewers leading the charge toward a greener, tastier future. From farm-to-table feasts to carbon-conscious craft beer, these trailblazers are proving that delicious and sustainable go hand in hand.

Farm-to-table dining

With zero-waste kitchens and locally sourced menus, Ontario’s eco-friendly restaurants are redefining what it means to eat sustainably—and getting the recognition they deserve.

Recently, three standout restaurants were awarded the prestigious MICHELIN Green Star for a dedication to sustainable gastronomy and culinary excellence. In addition, Feast On® is a certification program celebrating restaurants and food providers that prioritize Ontario-grown ingredients. By championing local farmers and producers, these establishments not only deliver fresh, seasonal flavours but also support sustainable agriculture across the province.

Goodlot Farmstead Brewing

Ontario’s craft brewers are experimental innovators by nature and have been finding creative ways to reduce their environmental impact long before “eco-friendly” became a buzzword.

With over 100 breweries represented by Ontario Craft Brewers, the province is home to a growing list of eco-conscious breweries that are raising the bar for sustainable brewing and driving positive social change.

Goodlot Farmstead Brewing Co.

Goodlot is an organic hop farm and farmstead brewery in Caledon that employs regenerative farming practices to encourage biodiversity, including rotational livestock grazing. Solar panels power the brewing, local ingredients are used and in partnership with WasteNot Farm, food waste is composted into healthy soil.

Sustainable wineries

Ontario’s wine industry is raising a glass to sustainability.

Since 2007, the Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario Certification has served as an environmental benchmark for wineries, developed in partnership with the Grape Growers of Ontario (GGO) and Ontario Craft Wineries (OCW). Beyond outlining eco-friendly standards and regulations, the program encourages innovation, helping wineries discover new opportunities to reduce their environmental impact. Look for the green leaf icon on wine labels to spot certified wineries committed to sustainability.

With over 50 wineries in Ontario certified, you can sip on celebrated cool-climate wines and learn firsthand about the eco-conscious practices and cutting-edge techniques that go into crafting these exceptional wines.

Southbrook Organic Vineyards

Southbrook sets the standard for sustainability as a certified organic, biodynamic and regenerative winery, fostering a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem. Its gold-certified LEED facility was thoughtfully designed to minimize energy, water and resource use.

Beyond winemaking, Southbrook champions environmental stewardship through pollinator habitats, protected wildlife corridors, a wetland treatment system and more.

The result is award-winning wines that embody the vitality of a healthy, resilient environment.

Location: 581 Niagara Stone Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Stratus Vineyards

Another fully LEED-certified facility, Stratus uses a pump-free, gravity-flow process, a less interventionist approach that requires less electricity, leaves a smaller environmental footprint and is gentler on the product.

Featherstone Estate Winery and Vineyard

At Featherstone Estate Winery, small-batch, eco-friendly wines meet warm hospitality and a delightful tapas menu.

This charming vineyard embraces sustainability through reduced chemical use, fostering biodiversity and an innovative (and adorable) approach to vineyard care—employing “sheep labour” to clear grape leaves in the fruiting zone, helping the clusters thrive. Keep an eye out for these hardworking, four-legged vineyard helpers during your visit.

Beyond their commitment to the environment, the winery owners are passionate advocates and generous supporters of local charities, making Featherstone a true gem for both wine lovers and the community.
