Things to do in Bay of Quinte and Belleville

History buffs should start at Belleville’s downtown, where you’ll find the glamorous Glanmore National Historic Site. The 1883 mansion, originally owned by a banker and his wife, a descendant of important United Empire Loyalist families in the region, has been restored to reflect the original residents’ wealth and status. The furnishings and architecture reflect the popular turn-of-the-century Second Empire style, during which elaborate mansard roofing and ornate details reigned.

Jumping forward in time, the vintage Empire Theatre from the late 1930s is an excellent venue for live shows and entertainment, where you can catch comedy, music and even indie films. This theatre is located right by the river, along the Riverfront Trail.

After your show, check out one of Belleville’s many restaurants with incredible views and lovely outdoor seating. You’ll find casual fare with a stunning view of the water at the Boathouse Seafood Restaurant and Waterfront Patio. Watch the boats go by as you savour great food and enjoy a cold beer. Across the restaurant’s small inlet, Victoria Park offers possibly even more impressive views of the bay and a great place to watch boats enter and exit the harbour.

For a local brew, travel up the river to Signal Brewery, and yet another Belleville restaurant with an incredible view. The outdoor patio offers an excellent view of the water, which you can enjoy while you taste some of Belleville’s delicious craft beer. If you prefer wine, travel across the Bay of Quinte to Three Dog Winery in Prince Edward County, where you’ll find a casual vineyard. The winery often hosts live music and food trucks, making it a perfect afternoon hang. Watch the sun go down over the beautiful bay from this picturesque winery.

You’ll find more views at the waterfront East Zwick’s Centennial Park, a vast dog park with extensive biking and walking trails. Go for a ride or simply sit at a bench and watch the water. Those with kids should travel upstream to Pirate Ship Park, where a large wooden pirate ship welcomes children to play. Parents will enjoy the views of the river and the nearby restaurants and bars.

In Belleville’s northern region, HR Frink Conservation Area and Outdoor Education Centre offers outdoor excursions for families, and hiking enthusiasts. With extensive and challenging hikes, this park provides your fix of nature. The accessible boardwalk trails are great for anyone who prefers a lighter walk. Along the boardwalk, you’ll get views of the wetlands that stretch wide to either side.

Nearby, Black Bear Ridge Golf Course is a beloved course with an excellent reputation for its expertly designed layout. The well-kept course is a perfect place for beginners and experts alike to enjoy a day outside. In Belleville’s eastern region, the Tyendinaga Cavern and Caves provide an ideal activity for the adventurous. Take a guided tour down below ground level, where you’ll learn about the largest natural cavern in Ontario.

Of course, the real draw of Belleville is its proximity to the gorgeous Bay of Quinte. Spend the day sailing on the water or go on a mission to catch a walleye for dinner. The bay welcomes kayaks, canoes, motorboats and sailboats, as well as swimmers who want to go for a dip in the alluring waters.
