Love languages are the different ways people communicate and receive love from their partners.

Quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, physical touch and words of affirmation are all examples of the five love languages. Knowing your partner’s communication style and understanding how to communicate with them is important to keep your relationship strong.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, here are some fun date ideas to incorporate your partner’s preferred love language into romantic activities for couples.

Quality time

Spend quality time away from life’s busy day-to-day routine and create moments and memories together on a date night.

Laugh together: Visit a comedy club like Yuk Yuk’s or Comedy Bar in Toronto, or book a show at Second City.

Arrange a clay date: Clayworx Ceramic Arts Learning Centre offers pottery lessons for all skill levels, private lessons can be arranged. Learn how to use the pottery wheel at Sketch Clay + Pottery in Windsor. If you want to learn a variety of artistic skills, sign up for “Introduction to Everything” provided at the Art Gallery of Ontario

Enjoy an evening at the opera or the symphony: Attend the engaging retelling of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto. In Ottawa, take in the NAC Orchestra performance of a Valentine’s Playlist. It features familiar music that celebrates love and friendship.

Heat up the romance at a winter resort or glamping in the woods: Choose from a selection of romantic getaway packages offered by Resorts of Ontario. Or plan a cozy winter cabin retreat or a romantic getaway in a comfortable yurt or geodesic dome.

Enjoy wine by the fire or in a dome: Make a reservation at the Winter Wine Dome at Fielding Estate Winery in Beamsville. Sip on wine and nibble on charcuterie board appetizers together. You can also make arrangements to be seated at an intimate fireside table inside.

Follow your heart on a chocolate trail: Explore the Stratford Chocolate Trail on a self-guided tour with your sweetheart.

Celebrate nature on a magical moonlight stroll: Located in Mountsberg Conservation Area, Winterlit features colourful light installations, cozy fireside lounges, delicious treats and more. Purchase a heart to paint and add it to the LOVE display. Proceeds from your purchase support the animals at Mountsberg.

Receiving gifts

Find the perfect gift for the one you love.

Purchase gifts that reflect your partner’s personality: Shop for unique and one-of-a-kind gifts at antique markets and specialty shops. Art gallery and museum gift shops are another great source for thoughtful gifts.

Buy merch for beer lovers: Visit breweries and cideries, where you can purchase beer-branded merchandise.

Gift earth-friendly products: Maker House Company in Ottawa sells upcycled and recycled products if you’re looking for eco-friendly gifts.

Shop at outlet malls: Check out gift ideas at Ontario outlet malls.

Acts of service

Treat your loved one to a special service or an act of kindness, to free them from the mental load of daily tasks and commitments.

Close your home kitchen and dine out: Treat your taste buds to diverse flavours, aromas and textures at top Ontario restaurants, including recent MICHELIN starred restaurants. Make a reservation for brunch, pair local food with wine at a winery restaurant, savour vegetarian food or keep it casual and fill your bellies at one of Ontario winter festivals.

Spend a luxurious night in the city: Make a reservation at the luxurious Park Hyatt Toronto and enjoy a cocktail on the 17th floor. Take in the dreamy views from the Iconic Writers Room, experience the tasting menu at the Joni Restaurant or check out what’s on their seasonal menu.

Physical touch

Express your affection with touch.

Rejuvenate at the spa: Vettä Spa, located near Horseshoe Resort in Barrie, provides relaxing treatments to relieve tension. Book a couple’s massage or a Swedish massage at the Scandinave Spa in Blue Mountains. At St. Anne’s Spa in Grafton, the Couple’s Day Spa Experience is a day spa activity with experiences and treatments that invigorate the senses.

Go ice skating: Grab your skates and hold hands while enjoying the outdoors at Ontario city skating rinks or countryside skating trails and rinks. Warm up together with delicious hot chocolate after your skate.

Cozy up on a romantic sleigh ride: Experience a warm and cozy sleigh ride with Back of Beyond Equine Centre in Huntsville. Glide along tranquil farm trails that are lit to create a romantic mood. Then spend the remainder of the experience around a campfire for more snuggles.  Merrylynd Farm near Peterborough offers moonlit sleigh rides.

Words of affirmation

Put your feelings into words.

Put your words to paper: Write beautiful words on beautiful stationery from Ottawa’s Paper Papier in the Byward Market,  Figg Street Co. in Thorold or Papery and Hanji Gifts in Toronto.  Wonderpens in Toronto’s Annex has a wide assortment of fountain pens to help pen your next poem.

Climb new heights together: Put your faith in each other at an indoor rock climbing gym and cheer each other on with words of encouragement.

Give signage with words of encouragement: Specializing in rustic style and home decor, Unionville’s Lemonade Stand has a wide assortment of motivational signage and gifts with words of love for that special someone.
