Commitment to sustainable tourism
Destination Ontario proudly signed the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge, demonstrating our commitment to improving the sustainability performance of our organization between now and 2030.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities.”
Our initiatives
In alignment with this pledge, we are committed to measuring and improving our sustainability performance annually by focusing on the following initiatives:
- Promoting sustainable travel: Encourage and showcase sustainable travel options, experiences and certified operators within Ontario, helping travellers make eco-friendly choices.
- Reducing environmental impact: Focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness as part of our internal organizational thinking and framework by reducing waste and encouraging digital sharing as an alternative to printing.
- Becoming leaders in sustainable tourism: Empower the tourism industry with resources to enhance sustainable tourism practices, while encouraging tourism partners and operators to take the Sustainable Tourism 2030 pledge and pursue GreenStep certification as a Sustainable Tourism destination or business.
- Achieving organizational sustainability certification: Pursue organizational certification with Canadian-based provider GreenStep Sustainable Tourism, that will verify our current sustainability performance against globally-recognized standards.
Destination Ontario is excited to be part of this global movement toward a more sustainable future in tourism. We encourage all industry partners to join us in this movement.
