Strategically positioned at the entrance of Georgian Bay’s North Channel, the village of Killarney first served as a fur trading post. Owing to its significant position along the popular water route, the Ojibwe originally called the place Shebahonaning, which means “safe canoe passage”.
Today, outdoor enthusiasts gravitate to the pristine natural spaces and waterways around Killarney for hiking, canoeing and kayaking. Notable locations include Killarney Provincial Park and Point Grondine Park.
Where is Killarney?
The municipality of Killarney, Ontario is located on the north shore of Georgian Bay, under 100 kilometres southwest of Sudbury. It lies almost directly adjacent to Little Current on Manitoulin Island, across the North Channel.
The main road into the town is Highway 637 west of the Trans-Canada Highway. Killarney is also accessible by boat, floatplane or private aircraft into the Killarney Municipal Airport.

Things to do in Killarney
Hike a 100-kilometre trail
The Killarney region is home to one of Ontario’s most treasured parks, Killarney Provincial Park, home to the La Cloche Silhouette Trail. The trail can take up to 10 days to complete.
Go for a paddle

Trek to a historic lighthouse
Hike along the 4.5-kilometre Killarney Lighthouse Trail to enjoy views of Georgian Bay and the namesake Killarney Lighthouse, built in the 1800s.

Don’t forget to stop in at Herbert Fisheries, where locally caught fish has been served up daily for over thirty years. The restaurant offers a dockside patio in warmer months.
