What is a Yurt?

A yurt is a portable structure that’s basically a cross between a tent and a cabin. Originally developed as the traditional dwelling of nomadic people in Mongolia and other areas of North Asia, yurts feature a hard floor, are circular in shape and most have a wooden frame covered in tent or hardy fabric material.

In Ontario, you’ll find everything from basic yurts with beds, tables and chairs in some of Ontario’s Provincial and National Parks, to privately operated and fully outfitted "glamping" yurts.

Be sure to check what amenities are available in the yurt you are considering renting and what, if any, supplies are included.  You want to have as much information as possible so you can pack for an enjoyable vacation.

Provincial Park yurts

Here is a list of Provincial Parks that offer yurt rentals. Although yurts in the parks are more basic, they do offer you access to all the amazing outdoor activities such as trails, beaches and wildlife viewing, as well as and the all-important comfort stations. Many of them have a minimum stay. Remember to book early as most parks only have a few yurts available so they book up quickly.

Ontario National Park yurts and oTENTiks

National Parks in Ontario have two different experiences when it comes to yurt accommodations. Bruce Peninsula National Park features yurts - with a twist – with murphy beds, huge decks, a propane barbeque and other perks.

Other National Parks have what’s called “oTENTiks”, an A framed square structure rather than the traditional round yurt that each sleep five to six people. They come with an indoor table and chairs set and indoor lighting. Numbers are limited, so book early as they don’t last long. Here is a list of parks that offer oTENTik rentals:
